Mr Derek Mercer FRCS

Mr Derek Mercer graduated from Dundee University in 1975 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1980. His Plastic Surgery training was carried out in Manchester and Queen Victoria Hospital Grinstead and included secondment to the Institut Curie Centre in Paris, a Specialist Centre of Breast Reconstruction. Further plastic surgery experience was gained in Oslo and Strasbourg and he became a member of the Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in 1985.
Mr Mercer was appointed Consultant Plastic Surgeon at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1988 and until recently was the Lead Clinician of the Plastic Surgery Department. He was instrumental in setting up a combined breast clinic and pioneered immediate breast reconstruction following mastectomy at St Thomas' Hospital.
Mr Mercer has Specialist expertise in skin cancers and is a member of the multidisciplinary team for malignant skin lesions for the SE Region. He carries out hundreds of operations each year removing skin-tumours and has particular expertise in reconstructive techniques.
In addition to his NHS commitments Mr Mercer has been in private practice since 1988. This is a busy cosmetic practice and includes all aspects of cosmetic surgery, including surgery to the face, abdomen and breasts. He has a particular interest in breast enlargement, uplift and reduction.
