Mr Derek Mercer graduated from Dundee University
in 1975 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons
in 1980. His Plastic Surgery training was carried out in Manchester
and Queen Victoria Hospital Grinstead and included secondment
to the Institut Curie Centre in Paris, a Specialist centre
for Breast Reconstruction. Further plastic surgery experience
abroad was gained in Oslo and Strasbourg and he became a member
of the Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in 1985.
Mr Mercer was appointed Consultant Plastic
Surgeon at St Thomas' Hospital in 1988. He is the Lead Clinician
of the Plastic Surgery Department and carries out satellite
clinics at Orpington and Farnborough. Mr Mercer was instrumental
in setting up a combined breast clinic with the general surgeons
and pioneered immediate breast reconstruction following mastectomy
at St Thomas' Hospital. He has been involved in establishing
a post-graduate training programme for plastic surgeons in
the Yemen and has been active in the education of Breast Care
Nurses.
In addition to his NHS commitments Mr Mercer
has been in private practice since 1988. His private practice
includes all aspects of cosmetic surgery, with a special interest
in breast surgery, including augmentation, reduction and nipple
reconstruction.

Mr Mercer has over ten years experience as
a Consultant in private practice. He operates at well established
hospitals with excellent operating facilities with friendly
and efficient staff at hand to offer advice and support.
